Newmarket Open Door Foodbank

Open Door (Registered Charity 1070554) is a co-operative venture between Newmarket Churches Together and the local authorities. It runs housing for up to 26 vulnerable young people as well as a charity superstore and the Newmarket foodbank. There is also a ‘pop-up’ shop each week at the Catholic Church Hall in Exeter Road, Newmarket.

The foodbank is located at Unit 5, Craven Way (off Exning Road) and is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10:30 to 14:30 each day.

Clients are referred to the foodbank by social services, the job centre and local charities  such as Racing Welfare, the Injured Jockeys Fund, Refuges. We also take referrals from local schools and medical practices.

The food that we have to give comes from local donations (mainly from supermarkets, and churches, but also some businesses), as well as from distribution centres and the national network FareShare.

We had expected the need for the foodbank to reduce as the pandemic eased, but the opposite is true, and need is rising as the cost of living crisis starts to bite. We are also seeing a reduction in donations as people have less disposable income to give.

As you can see we rely heavily on donations of food, so if you can help we will be very grateful.

Food that stores easily, and is easy to prepare is particularly welcome – however we have large stocks of PASTA, BREAKFAST CEREALS, SOUP AND BAKED BEANS, so do not need these for the foreseeable future.

We always need:

Tinned vegetables

Tinned meat including Fray Bentos pies

Tinned fruit

Tinned Rice Pudding

Long life milk (especially semi-skimmed)

Jams

Small packs of rice

Cook-in-sauces for rice or pasta (such as curries and bologneses)

Pot noodles

Sugar

Toilet Rolls

Toothpaste

Soap

If you can deliver while fresh we are most grateful for -

Butter in spreadable packs

Cheese

Eggs

Donations can be delivered to the foodbank at any time that we are open or left at the collection points in most local supermarkets (not Waitrose).

You will also find local collection points at St. Marys Church, Cheveley, St. Marys Church Woodditton and Ashley Village Shop.

We are most grateful for the support of all, especially our local churches.
